ISPA Certificates of Competency are internationally recognized to fulfill the requirements for bareboat charter and are ideal for people who want to pursue boating careers in the Pleasure Craft Industry or for those who simply want to live the dream and adventure on their own boats or charter boats.
The International Sail And Power Academy Training Program is presented in a flexible, modular lessons format that emphasizes a hands-on approach to sailing that encourages you to learn at your own pace. Each course has a shore-based and an on-the-water practical component.

ISPA International Certificate of Competency for
Competent Crew and Inland Skipper - SAIL
When registered with the International Sail and Power Academy Inc., (ISPA) the holder is certified as Skipper on inland waters and is competent to sail a vessel under 40 ft/12 m or 30 GT on inland waters or safe harbours during daylight hours in light to moderate wind conditions.
Holders of ISPA Competent Crew and Inland Skipper SAIL Certificates of Competency are also qualified to crew aboard sailing vessels in tidal waters with a qualified Skipper on board.
ISPA Competent Crew - Sail Shore-Based Lessons Component
Prerequisites:
Students are advised to obtain a VHF ROC (M) DSC maritime radio operators licence early in their learning cycle.
The shore-based component is completed by home study prior to the practical, on-the-water component.
Performance objectives:
ISPA Competent Crew - Sail workbook assessments to be completed.

On the Water Practical Sailing Component

On the water Component duration:
Minimum 40 hours boating on the water to complete both Shore-Based Component and the on-the-water practical components.
ISPA International Certificate of Competency for
Day Skipper Bareboat - SAIL
When registered with International Sail and Power Academy Inc., (ISPA) the holder is certifed competent
to Skipper a Sailing vessel and be responsible for the safety of his/her vessel and crew on pleasure boats or Bareboat Charter boats up to 30GT or 45 ft/14 m while sailing in familiar waters within 12 nm of safe harbour during daylight hours in moderate wind and sea conditions using basic navigational skills.
ISPA Day Skipper Bareboat Sailing Shore-Based Boating Course
Prerequisites: ISPA Competent Crew Shore Based Component with 20 hours practical experience, e.g. Competent Crew Practical Component and a
VHF ROC (M) DSC maritime radio operator licence.
The shore-based Sailing Course component is completed by home study prior to enrolling in the practical on-the-water component.

ISPA International Certificate of Competency for
Coastal Navigator - SAIL and POWER Correspondence Course
When registered with International Sail and Power Academy Inc., (ISPA) the holder is certified competent to navigate up to 40 GT Sail or Powerboats up to 50 ft/15 m in coastal tidal waters without restriction on the area of navigation during daylight hours using charts, hand bearing compass, GPS and navigational aids.
ISPA Shore-Based Coastal Navigation Correspondence Course
Prerequisites: No navigation knowledge required. Preferably ISPA Day Skipper Bareboat Certificate of Competency or some on the water power boating or sailing experience.
Performance objectives and Certificate:
Complete all module lessons assessments and chart work exercises in the ISPA Coastal Navigator workbook by correspondence with available online support
Estimated time required: 20 hours.
On-the-Water Practical Component
The practical, on-the-water component can be taken on the ISPA Coastal Skipper Certificate of Competency Course.
ISPA International Certificate of Competency for
Multi-Hull Coastal Advanced Skipper Bareboat - SAIL
When registered with International Sail and Power Academy Inc., (ISPA) the holder is certified competent to Skipper a 30GT Multi-Hull Sailboat up to a 50 ft/15 m including boats used for private purposes and bareboat charters in coastal tidal waters, in any conditions, day or night.
Prerequisites:
Competent Crew Sail, Day Skipper Sail and Coastal Navigator standards must be attained prior to the Multi-hull boating endorsement lessons.
Performance objectives:
Competency in all aspects of basic sailing of a multi-hull vessel and understanding the differences between monohull and multi-hull sailing
On the Water Component duration:
40 hours
To complete this endorsement the candidate is require to:
1. Complete the Shore-Based component prior to the practical component
2. Complete all of the performance objectives in the ISPA logbook
ISPA International Certificate of Competency for
Coastal Advanced Skipper Bareboat - ISPA
When registered with International Sail and Power Academy Inc., (ISPA) the holder is certified competent as Advanced Bareboat Coastal Skipper and Navigator to be responsible for the safety of his/her sailing vessel and crew on coastal passages.
Competent to operate boats used for private purposes and bareboat charters, up to 100 GT in coastal tidal waters, day or night.
Prerequisites:
ISPA Coastal Navigator, First Aid + CPR, VHF ROC (M) DSC or GMDSS Radio Certificate
Prerequisites:
ISPA Day Skipper Sail, ISPA Coastal Navigator Shore-Based Certificate (workbooks lessons must be completed and brought to the course.)
Performance objectives:

On the water component duration:
Must live aboard in tidal waters for a minimum of 5 days, including 4-night hours and 125 miles total. Stand a rotational navigational watch for the duration of the course.
ISPA International Certificate of Competency for
Yachtmaster Offshore
When Registered with International Sail and Power Academy Inc., (ISPA,) the holder is certified competent as Yachtmaster Offshore - SAIL skipper and navigator to be responsible for the safety of vessel and crew on yachts used for private purposes and bareboat charters up to 100 GT while making offshore passages within 150 miles of the coastline where navigational and weather hazards exist, in any conditions, at any time day or night.
ISPA Yachtmaster Offshore Sailing Shore-Based
Prerequisistes:
ISPA Coastal Skipper Bareboat Certificate of Competency - SAIL.
First Aid + CPR, VHF ROC (M) DCS or GMDSS Radio operator licence.
Candidates should have several years sailing experience.
No Exceptions
Performance objectives and Certification:
ISPA Yachtmaster Offshore Sail workbook assessments to be completed.
Module 1 Offshore Sailing and Spinnaker
Module 2 Advanced (high-tech) Navigation
Module 3 Offshore Seamanship
Module 4 Offshore Weather 3
Minimum Duration: 20 hours.
ISPA Yachtmastert Offshore Practical Course
Prerequisites:
International Certificate of Competency Coastal Navigator and Coastal Skipper - SAIL and Yachtmaster Offshore - SAIL Shore-Based Course.
First Aid + CPR, VHF ROC (M) DCS or GMDDS radio operator course, two day Personal Survival at Sea Course Certificate, Celestial Navigation Shore-Based course.
In addition: Minimum practical experience of 600 miles, 10 days as skipper.
Students will be required to plan the passages and help prepare the boat.
Performance objectives for the Offshore Practical Component:
Competency in all of the performance objectives in this logbook as follows:
Offshore Passage Making including:
Module 1 Offshore Sailing and Spinnaker Practical
Module 2 Advanced (high-tech) Navigation Practical
Module 3 Offshore Seamanship Practical

On the water course duration: Must be a live aboard course in tidal waters, 7 days including, 500 miles and two overnight passages. Stand a rotational watches for the duration of the course.
